Millennials In Flexible Work Space

The world of work is changing rapidly with advances in technology and the new generation of workers (the so-called millennials) entering the workplace. A well-designed fit-out of your physical office environment can help you to both attract and retain these talented young staff.

Here’s what tends to work best:

1.  Cutting-edge technology

We live in the technology age. And millennials are the first generation to have lived their entire lives with the internet and smart devices like mobile phones. They’re also used to regularly upgrading their technology so that they can get their hands on the latest devices and software.

Millennials expect to be able to use cutting-edge technology anytime and anywhere, including in their workplaces. It’s important for employers to accommodate this need. So be sure to offer things like a fast, reliable Wi-Fi connection and cutting-edge tools so that they can work and communicate as efficiently as possible.

For instance, voice-driven, artificially intelligent personal assistants can allow millennials to quickly get on top of time-sucking tasks like:

  • Responding to emails

Let’s face it, most young people don’t want to be clones of their parents’ generation. So, unconventional (but practical) work space designs are appealing.

That means getting creative with office layout and decor, rather than making the modern work environment look like a 21st-century version of an assembly line. Instead of rows of cubicles or offices, try incorporating inviting communal areas, plenty of natural light and quirky artwork or furniture.

Millennials also generally prefer collaboration over competition, so they work best in open spaces that:

  • Promote transparency.

And this doesn’t just apply to their immediate workspace. Break-out areas are also popular with young people because they help recharge creative batteries and reset motivation. They also encourage conversations with people from different organisational departments.

3. Flexible designs

Millennials are comfortable with change and often welcome it. They might even become bored with seeing the same workspace design every day. So, keeping things flexible may boost productivity.

Flexible office designs can be easily adapted for changing circumstances.

Think modular designs, light-weight, movable furniture, mobile partitioning and kanban (white) boards. These allow different settings to be quickly created for different types of work and can mean you’re able to create private and shared work spaces as different needs arise.

Millennials are generally quite environmentally-conscious. They have grown up hearing about issues like pollution, environmental degradation and climate change, so many value sustainability.

This philosophy also extends to the office premises where they work. Buildings that have the internationally recognised BREEAM and/or LEED certifications are likely to be attractive to millennials because they minimise their impact on the environment and are designed with efficiency (in terms of energy, water and materials) in mind.

NABERS ratings are also a key indicator of a building’s sustainability in Australia, and are grouped into the following categories:

  • Energy
  • Water
  • Waste
  • Indoor Environment

Each category receives a one-to-six star national rating based on its environmental impact – 1 star represents poor performance, while six stars represents market leading performance.
